The Henry K. Peterson Foundation annually provides grants to nonprofit organizations who, as part of their stated mission, provide services to the disabled population of Southwest Iowa.
Henry K. Peterson (1884-1966) was born in Council Bluffs Iowa. After graduating from Drake University Law School in 1908, he practiced law, served as the Council Bluffs City Attorney, became a 1936 Congressional candidate, and the first chair of the Council Bluffs City Planning Commission. In 1955, he was appointed to the Iowa Supreme Court where he served for ten years.
The Henry K. Peterson Foundation annually awards approximately $10,000 in total to nonprofit organizations.
Eligibility
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?
- Nonprofit organizations whose stated mission includes providing services to individuals with disabilities.
- Organizations serving the disabled population specifically within Southwest Iowa.
WHAT TYPE OF PROJECTS ARE ELIGIBLE?
- Programs, services, or initiatives that directly support or improve the lives of people with disabilities in Southwest Iowa.
- Projects aligned with the applicant organization’s mission and demonstrating clear community benefit.

The Henry K. Peterson Foundation accepts applications annually during their fall grant cycle. October 1 – November 1
GRANTING CRITERIA
PROJECTS ARE SELECTED BASED ON:
- Ability to meet a clear, identifiable need
- Demonstration of partnerships and collaboration
- Detailed plans for managing the project/program: including financials, resources and data tracking
- Anticipated reach and impact
THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION'S FUNDING LIMITATIONS INCLUDE:
- Organizations that practice discrimination by race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender, age, or national origin
- Clinical or medical research
- Political projects of any kind
- Annual fund drives
- Real estate acquisitions
- Operating deficits or retirement of debt
