Mental Health and Substance Use Fund Event 2024

The Community Foundation hosted its second annual Mental Health & Substance Abuse Fund event on Wednesday, bringing together more than 60 community members for a morning focused on strengthening mental well‑being in western Iowa. Attendees heard from an exceptional panel of subject‑matter experts who shared insights on navigating the mental health and substance use system, understanding available resources, and supporting individuals and families across the region.

  • Ryan Crane, Executive Director, NAMI Iowa - statewide advocacy, education, and support resources
  • Melissa Hawkins, MS, Licensed Mental Health Therapist, 712 Counseling - community‑based therapeutic approaches
  • Suzanne Watson, CEO, Southwest Iowa MHDS Region - regional systems, access points, and service coordination

The Community Foundation extends its appreciation to Iowa Western for providing its beautiful student center as the venue for this year’s event.

Impact of the Fund

The Southwest Iowa Mental Health & Substance Abuse Fund, a field‑of‑interest fund at the Community Foundation, has granted more than $24,000 to nonprofit organizations delivering life‑affirming programs and services that support mental health and resilience throughout western Iowa. These investments help expand education, prevention, and access to care for individuals and families across the region.
